Last week, the President signed an historic health care reform bill that will not only affect our membership, but also every small business owner in the country. There are several very challenging aspects to this bill, including the prohibition of pooling across state lines and the $2000 per employee penalty many small business people will be facing.
AH&LA worked tirelessly to help the Congress and Administration understand the effect this bill will have on hotel owners across the country. While the bill passed regardless, there will still be opportunities for the hospitality industry to influence the details and, we hope, mitigate the damage.
This is not the time to resign ourselves to the bill as it now stands nor to abdicate our influence on the many other issues that will present themselves in short order, including immigration. If anything, the passage of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act by a narrow 219-212 vote underscores how very important it is for every one of us to be informed, involved and invested.
AH&LA’s Vice President of Governmental Affairs Kevin Maher is an excellent source of information on what happens next and what issues are on the horizon that we must influence as an industry.
The passage of this bill charts a more difficult course for our recovery, but it is also an important reminder that —without active involvement — we leave ourselves vulnerable to forces that lack an understanding of our industry and all that we contribute to the nation’s economy.

Re: Healthcare Reform
please forward me information that would help me decide how to deal with health care
Re: Healthcare ReformThank you Mr. Carrier--this is right on point. Another part of the conversation will be the illegal workers currently employed as temporary workers and the law that ties hotel operators to liability for the hiring or usage of illegals--then the president insists that we count them into our census as if they are legal and we will offer them free heathcare. Secondly--we are seeing more union actions taking place--this is very concerning. We are educating our people to the downside of the unions--this needs to be a national program. Also the raising of student loan interest rates--this will make it more difficult for young people to get the education that our industry needs to meet the future. Its only been a year and I am asking my senator to seek a way where a change can be made.

Re: Healthcare Reformgentelmansand ladiesas a hotel owner i do not want to be in a business of providing/shopping every year for health care for my employees. remember we have a socialized medical system in America for which 30% of the population pays for it ( if you include 2/3 on medicare military employees retired population and the fed/state/local governments school and colleges that is 70%of the population we need single payee system like Canada where business does not have to worry about health care, lets not be short sighted look at our long term future we need to SUPPORT single payee system
