Where Have All The Visionaries Gone?

When times are hard, we instinctively revert to what we already know. Stick to the tried-and-true. Save risk taking for another day. I believe that if we strictly adhere to these principles, however, it will continue to lead us down the road we’ve travelled over the last 18 months.

Hotel & Motel Management hosted a Twitterfest last week and solicited creative input from the hospitality community. The publication posted Twitterfest live on its Web site and, I can tell you, creativity exists within our industry.

We’ve devoted so much time to price adjustments — and not in the right direction — that we’ve ignored other marketing opportunities. Cutting our rates won’t return our industry to profitability and, if the last year is any test, doesn’t inspire the public to travel any more. So, where do we go from here?

We change the conversation.

What marketing initiatives have you undertaken in your properties? Which worked and which didn’t … and why? What have you done to increase visibility and reservations at your properties?

Compiling our case studies and creative programs just might hasten our journey on the road to recovery. Please share your successes, and your failures, so that we can use our collective experience and knowledge to break through this recession.

Re: Where Have All The Visionaries Gone?

Just don't think that by paying your desk people 9 or 10 bucks an hr is going to get you all the walk ins to stay in your hotel..let them make upto 50 pct of their salary in bonuses by giving them dollar bonus if they rope in customer at 10 above the hotels revpar or 2 dollar for 20 above ravpar of the day..otherwise they have no incentive to rent that extra room for you..we gave away over 50k in FD bonuses and ended up losing only $1.85 in ADR where all the comp sets for our hotel lost three times or more..50 k gave us over 1mm in exrtra rev..!!

As usual Bharat you are ahead of the game and have applied entrepreneurial thinking with motivation!

By giving your front desk teams the direct financial motivation to sell, they respond and you both win.

Thanks for the great idea and motivation! MC

I have no magic wand but I do appreciate your persistent message to the industry on not lowering rates in desperation as that is not the solution but problem in itself.
